Project Overview

Project Title: Preventing and Managing Obesity
Background: Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) is the cross border health and social care partnership, comprising the Health Service Executive in the Republic of Ireland and the Southern and Western Health & Social Care Trusts, the Health and Social Care Board and the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland. CAWT has been successful in securing funding from the European Union INTERREG IVA programme, to progress a three year cross border obesity prevention and management project aimed at families.

 

Project Description

'Healthy Lifestyles' - A Community Approach to Prevention of Obesity

This is a prevention programme, to support 250 families with children under 5 years, to reduce the risk of childhood obesity, through the provision of life skills to make positive lifestyle changes.  Outcomes for families will demonstrate:   
1.   an increased ability to identify healthy food options and make healthier food choices
2.   increased awareness/knowledge of obesity related health messages
3.   increased physical activity levels
 
An initial family lifestyle assessment will help further define the programme and a family action plan will shape family progress over a three month period which involves regular and follow-up support.

Impact – 250 families making healthier choices and increased physical activity levels.

 

   
 'Making a Difference'
 - A Family Approach to Managing Obesity

This is a weight management programme targeting 110 overweight/obese children aged 8 -11 with a family approach. This programme will manage childhood obesity through a holistic approach, incorporating healthy eating, an active lifestyle and positive mental health messages, with outcomes which demonstrate:

 

1.   a maintenance/reduction in BMI/weight in relation to appropriate age/sex weight status;
2.   a healthier lifestyle for the whole family unit;
3.   an understanding of the health affects of obesity;
4.   increased healthy self esteem;
5.   an increased knowledge of diet/nutrition;
6.   healthier food choices for the whole family unit;
7.   an increased awareness of food habits;
8.   increased physical activity levels, adopting national recommended levels; and,
9.   a reduction in sedentary behaviour.
 
An initial child assessment alongside the development of personal and family goals will further define the six month programme which involves regular and follow-up support.  An action plan will further help to embed changes in every day lifestyle. 
 
Expected Impact - 110 overweight/obese children aged 8-11 years will have adopted healthier lifestyles with a further impact on 520 people.
