BCCN Definition of Childminding / Home Daycare

A Home-based Professional Service carried out in the childminders own home to provide care and education, in a homely and family setting for other peoples children.  The age of the children that a childminder cares for can vary considerably; from birth until the parents consider that the childminding is no longer required.

Efficiently managed Childminding / Home Daycare Services provide a safe, caring and healthy environment that promotes children’s health, well-being, learning and development, supports parents, families and the wider community.  Services understand the value of a broad and stimulating programme of activities for all ages, which will lead to increased educational attainment, the creation of hobbies, interests and healthy leisure pursuits for children.

The BCCN believe that Quality Childminding / Home Daycare Services should:

  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all children
  • Respect and acknowledge the child’s rights to positive interactions, stimulation and protection from adults and other children in a manner which promotes development and independence
  • Respect the families rights to confidentiality
  • Value, respect and promote the diversity and culture of all children and their families
  • Provide equal opportunities for all children attending
  • Be accessible to all parents and children wishing to avail of the service
  • Encourage and develop a positive attitude towards the Irish language
  • Take a professional and ethical approach to the childminding business
  • Operate within the relevant legislation and keep up to date with legislation impacting on childminding services
  • Keep up to date with information and research on good practice for childminders
  • Have clear, written aims, objectives, policies and procedures for running your service
  • Develop links with  other individuals and networks in the area of childminding and the delivery of other childcare services
  • Ensure that the premises are suitable and meet the requirements of relevant legislation and good practice
  • Provide safe, clean, welcoming, secure and a well planned homely environment
  • Provide the children in your care with a wide range of material, activities and experiences that will promote their well-being, learning and development
